A woman in her 50s is in control of a bright white stage. Actress Olwen Fouéré swans away from a pile of brittle charcoal, with her layered deep purple skirt leaving a black trail behind. Her long hair is a shade darker than the floor, and falls over her shoulders, down the back of a chainmail silver jacket with big shoulder pads. The arms of her costume are scaled like a snake in armour.

Theatre: iGirl by Marina Carr at Abbey Theatre

9 - 30 Oct 2021 (Past)

In her first production as Abbey Theatre Artistic Director, Caitríona McLaughlin reunites with Marina Carr for the world premiere of iGirl.

Lone performer Olwen Fouéré (The Mai, By The Bog of Cats, Woman and Scarecrow) brings to life archetypal figures like Oedipus, Joscasta, Joan of Arc, Demeter, and our ancient human ancestors in an attempt to bring meaning to her own existence.

At once deeply individual and strikingly universal, iGirl is both a warning about our darkest inclinations and a celebration of human beings’ capacity for love and creativity.

iGirl will run from 9th – 30th October
