Invitation to collaborate in exploring the MY MINDS i exhibition by Artist Janet Mullarney, which is currently running at The Butler Gallery in Kilkenny.

A ViP gallery visit will take place on Saturday December 5th at 11.30 at The Butler Gallery in Kilkenny, paying attention to exploring Janet Mullarney’s ‘My Minds i’ exhibition in a non visual way. This gallery visit is part of an ongoing art project by artist Clare Mc Laughlin who is exploring access to art in gallery spaces for people with a visual impairment. The audio description of this exhibition is provided using the Discovery Pen system. In addition to the tour a full demonstration of the discovery pen system will be given by the gallery staff.

Location and Access: The Butler Gallery is located in the basement of Kilkenny Castle. Guide dogs are welcome. Unfortunately there is no access for wheelchair users in Kilkenny Castle.

Directions

From MacDonagh Train Station (for Train or Bus)

Kilkenny Castle is a 15 minute walk from the train station. After exiting the train station, walk down the steep hill. Turn left and cross two sets of traffic lights. Turn right, walking past St John’s Church. Take the first left after this Church onto John’s Street. Continue straight along John Street, crossing the river at John’s Bridge. Continue straight, you will now be on Rose Inn Street. At the traffic junction, turn left onto The Parade. Kilkenny Castle will be on your left at the top of The Parade.

Visitors enter Kilkenny Castle through a large cobble-stoned archway. As you walk through this arch, the Castle Park extends to your right and the entrance to the Castle itself to the left. After entering the Castle, turn right and follow the corridor for approximately 25 paces. You pass through an open doorway. Take two paces forward. On your right is a set of stairs, take the handrail on the left hand side, as the bottom right hand side is obstructed. Descend 11 steps to a slight platform, followed by a futher two steps without handrail. Continue along this corridor for about 45 paces. The Butler Gallery is on your left and the door will be open.

Parking:

There is no parking available at Kilkenny Castle, however some on-street car parking is available on The Parade (directly outside the Castle). This parking can be paid for using the meters situated along The Parade. The nearby Ormonde Hotel has an underground car park. This carpark is located on Ormonde Street, opposite the Ormonde Hotel.
