University College Dublin Cinema, Student Centre, Belfield, Dublin 4
While navigating daily discrimination, a filmmaker who inhabits and loves her unusual body searches the world for another person like her, and explores what it takes to love oneself fiercely despite the pervasiveness of ableism.
In this personal and disarmingly honest documentary Is There Anybody Out There? filmmaker Ella Glendining searches for individuals with the same rare disability as herself. She examines the challenges of self-love in an ableist world, experiences a number of unexpected surprises and encounters people who look like her.
This screening will take place on Monday 8 April at 5.30pm, with Guest Speaker Maryam Madani.
The UCD Volunteers Overseas Film Series is an integral part of UCDVO’s Global Citizenship Programme and is funded by Concern Worldwide and Irish Aid. A film by Ella Glendining | UK 2023 While navigating daily discrimination, a filmmaker who inhabits and loves her unusual body searches the world for another person like her, and explores what it takes to love oneself fiercely despite the pervasiveness of ableism.
Glendining’s film is a well argued and moving reminder that we still live in a world where too many see disability as something that needs to be ‘fixed’ rather than more willingly accommodated.
