Film: Peterloo at the Irish Film Institute (open captioned screening)

5 Nov 2018 (Past)

Irish Film Institute

Following the success of ‘Mr. Turner’ (2014), Mike Leigh returns to a historical setting with this dramatisation of events surrounding the Peterloo Massacre of 1819.

Taking the interest in class that has been common in his work to the fore, the film focuses on the emergence of the working class in Manchester, battling poverty and seeking fairer treatment in terms of pay and conditions as the gulf between them and their employers grows in the age of industrialisation. Although the film is characteristic of Leigh’s work with regard to its attention to detail and character, it is also perhaps his first epic.

Captioned screenings: Monday 5th (18.00) and Tuesday 6th (13.00)
