In the New York of Allen and Baumbach, Maggie (Greta Gerwig) proposes to have a baby alone, aided by a jovial nincompoop.

After meeting aspiring novelist John (Ethan Hawke), who is unable to focus on his work while tending to the whims of his brilliant, neurotic wife Georgette (Julianne Moore), her encouragement leads to love. Soon, Maggie and
John are themselves married, with a young daughter, but his novel remains unfinished. An unhappy Maggie decides to return John to Georgette in this entertaining blend of the screwball and the sophisticated.
