Exhibition: Declan Byrne a retrospective exhibition of painting and sculpture

25 Feb - 31 Mar 2021 (Past)

Online

Declan Byrne has been working as an artist since 2004 and has created a remarkable body of work.

His work takes inspiration from a wide variety of everyday objects. He transforms the world around him through detailed and clearly articulated compositions of built-up layers of drawing and painting. His paintings are rich and loaded with dence pattern and colour .The intricate and vivid detail in his canvases is echod in Declan’s more recent sculpture work, which is created from attaching carefully cut dried acrylic paint found in painting pallets to objects. For all artists art is a form of communication, and especially so for Declan. In art he has clearly found a way of communication. It is an outlet for his feelings and creative impulses, and the work does the talking.

Declan has shown widely internationally, including in Luxembourg, Finland, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, The Netherlands and the UK.

He has also shown in Ireland at the Kilkenny Arts Festival, Dublin City Council Offices, The Skibbereen Arts Festival and University College Cork.

He has been involved in a number of exchange and engagements projects, including with Project Ability Gallery, Glasgow, Scotland. Declan has been invited to have a solo exhibition at ATypical Gallery Belfast in Autumn 2021.

This remarkable exhibition was originally due to take place in 2020 as a physical, public event, but due to COVID-19 restrictions and safety measures the exhibition had to be postponed. Declan’s enthusiasm to share his work is reflected in the spirit of all KCAT’s artists, and this spirit was the catalyst to develop a new digital space to present work in the shifting landscape of Corona-times.

In December 2020 Declan and the KCAT studio team hung the exhibition at Kilfane Glebe House just outside Thomastown with no public audience. Instead the exhibition was filmed and photographed to be shared online on KCAT’s new digital venue The Other SpaceThis new platform is an exciting alternative means in uncertain and restricted times of showcasing an d presenting new work and projects by KCAT Artists.

KCAT are delighted that Declan Byrne’s mid-career retrospective is the inaugural project presented here in The Other Space.
