Azure Tours at Highlanes Gallery 2023: Dementia-inclusive art viewing programme
10 Mar - 8 Dec 2023 (Past)
The Azure art viewing programme at Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda is designed for people living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and their carers. Visits are welcomed from care homes groups as well as individuals.
The Azure sessions provide an opportunity for participants to explore artworks from the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection and Exhibition Programme. Tea, coffee and biscuits begin the session, where you will have an opportunity to look at art more closely in a caring, friendly and social environment, discussing the pieces and giving opinions in a non-judgemental setting.
What to Expect
Taking place monthly on Fridays with artist Claire Halpin, the sessions are participant-centred and aim to create inclusive discussion around artwork. Using Visual Thinking Strategies, the session encourages reflective discussion, where you can offer your opinion about what is going on in an artwork. No prior knowledge or experience is needed; this is an enjoyable way of discovering more about an artwork and hearing what others have to say.
Context
Dementia-related diseases affect roughly 48,000 people in Ireland, leaving individuals to feel isolated and often frustrated. By providing a friendly and inclusive environment in which people can freely participate in active discussion, Highlanes Gallery hopes to allow participants, and their carers feel like a more active and visible part of the community.
For over five years, Highlanes Gallery has been involved in the Azure Programme. The Azure network was established in 2012 in partnership with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Age & Opportunity, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and Butler Gallery, and has expanded to include numerous art venues nationwide.
