24 Jan 2018 (Past)

Gate Theatre, Cavendish Row, Dublin 1

WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION OF
Hans Christian Andersen’s
THE RED SHOES
in a new version by Nancy Harris

In this new Gate Studio Commission by Irish playwright Nancy Harris, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red Shoes, a fairy-tale of dance and destruction is given a contemporary retelling. An orphan girl, adopted by a wealthy Dublin family, is given a pair of beautiful red shoes. At first it appears her dreams have come true… but appearances can be very deceptive.

An exciting combination of Irish acting, singing and dancing talent will bring The Red Shoes to life on stage, with Stephanie Dufresne playing the leading role of Karen; and a stellar lineup of Rosaleen Linehan, Owen Roe, Marion O’Dwyer, David Pearse, Robbie O’Connor and Paul Mescal (recently seen as Jay Gatsby at the Gate), alongside the multi-talented trio of Ray Scannell, Muirne Bloomer and Muiris Crowley.

Captioned Performance: January 24th, 7.30pm
Age guidance:8+ years. Parental discretion recommended for under 12’s.
Tickets: €25 – €38

This World Premiere season of The Red Shoes has been rescheduled from the original dates by 7 days. This is the first production Selina Cartmell has directed since she took up her new role of Director of the Gate Theatre in April this year. Her priority over the past weeks has been to ensure that she has been available to lead the team at The Gate, alongside her role as director of this new production. This is the third production in THE OUTSIDER her inaugural season. This new era at the Gate has already produced critically acclaimed productions of The Great Gatsby and Tribes.

“When myself and the director Selina Cartmell began talking about this production, we had more questions than answers,” says writer Nancy Harris. “But we were clear on one thing – we did not want to white-wash the darker parts of the story. We knew that dance and music would play a big part, but the basic fairy-tale –wonderful and shocking as it sometimes is – had to stay in place.”
