Celebrating Irish Sign Language Awareness Week 2017

Tours, Performance & Screenings
To celebrate Irish Sign Language Awareness Week, the National Museum of Ireland has a special programme of tours, performances and other events — many of which include Irish Sign Language interpretation.

The programme features guided tours of our national archaeological, folklife, decorative arts and historical treasures, special performances and screenings. There’s even the opportunity to play in a real drumming ensemble.

Details of access arrangements are listed throughout the programme.

Irish Sign Language interpretation will be provided for ISL users. All Events are Free.

Wednesday, 20th September

Workshop: Drumming Traditions of the World
National Museum of Ireland: Decorative Arts & History

Students of the Holy Family School for the Deaf participate in a hands-on workshop on drumming traditions of the world with Brian Fleming of Dublin’s Culture Connects.

Workshop: Drumming Traditions of the World

Brian Fleming of Dublin’s Culture Connects leads a hands-on energetic workshop in which participants will learn to play traditional rhythms together on congas, djembes, bongos and dun duns. Expect plenty of laughs, tired arms and red hands! The workshop will finish with a session of ‘Tea & Chats’.

Tour: Treasures of the National Museum

Join us for a guided tour of the Treasures of the National Museum, including the Tara Brooch and the Ardagh Chalice.

Friday, 22nd September

Screening: Irish War Echo
National Museum of Ireland: Decorative Arts & History (AV Theatre)
Collins Barracks, Benburb Street, Dublin 7.
5.00pm – 60 minutes

A film that recounts the experiences of members of the deaf community during this significant period in Ireland’s journey towards independence (1916–1922). The film is narrated by members of the deaf community.

Irish War Echo was produced with the assistance of Ireland 2016.

No booking required, first come basis. Ages 14+

Performance: The Holy Family Deaf Choir
National Museum of Ireland: Decorative Arts & History (Main Reception)

6.00pm – 15 minutes

Join us for a special performance in Irish Sign Language, by the Holy Family Deaf Choir, directed by Shirley Higgins and Lorraine Creed. Watching music being signed can transform a person’s experience of how they enjoy it, changing it from just a listening format to a visual representation of the lyrics and music.

No booking required, first come basis. All ages.

The Eileen Gray Exhibition

Join us for a guided tour of the Eileen Gray Exhibition, which explores one of the most influential designers and architects of the 20th century.
