Culture Night: ALL BODIES at The LAB Gallery

18 Sep 2020, 5:00 pm (Past)

The LAB Gallery

‘The social world is a large systemic prosthesis for the normative bodies its structures support’ – Shannon Jackson, Social Works

There has been a change to the LAB Gallery’s Culture Night 2020 programme, the ALL BODIES Film, to be launched this Friday 18th of September, unfortunately, has had to be postponed to a future date. However, the LAB will be launching the ALL BODIES Podcast this Friday the 18th on its website and various social media platforms including on Soundcloud, Instagram and Facebook.

ALL BODIES – A podcast & film
People with disabilities have bodies that function differently from the socially “normal” body that is accepted and assumed. ALL BODIES is a film and a podcast whose artists and curator have disabilities. The artists performing in the film include poet Philip Kenny and the indie-rock band Banríon. Their performances will be filmed at the LAB Gallery surrounded by artworks from Gemma Browne’s exhibition, The Invisible Sorceress and released for Culture Night, Friday 18th September 2020.

This live event will be accompanied by a podcast including artworks and conversations with Banríon’s fronts person Róisín Ní Haicéad, poet Philip Kenny and theatre practitioner Mairéad Folan, This podcast aims to examine disability in an insightful and personal way by reflecting on the artists’ and curator’s experiences of navigating the
normative world.

The podcast and film were produced for Culture Night to accommodate our challenging social landscape due to Covid 19. The LAB Gallery has adapted to these unusual times by bringing culture to you through digital platforms.

ALL BODIES is curated by Róisín Power Hackett, the ARC LAB Gallery Curatorial Scholar. Her area of research is the inclusion in and access to the arts for disabled people/people with disabilities. ALL BODIES is supported by The LAB Gallery and Dublin City Arts Office in partnership with Arts & Disability Ireland.

Róísín Ní Haicéad studies sociology and social policy in Trinity College Dublin and dips in and out of disability and housing activism. Banríon is an indie-rock band, fresh on Dublin’s indie/alt-rocky/post punky DIY scene – whatever that is. Headed by Róisín Ní Haicéid, the songs are raw, revolving around the complex and unique theme of disability, alongside relatable young experiences such as emigration, heartbreak and loving your friends. Their three-part debut EP ‘airport dads’ was recorded in drummer Michael Nagle’s sitting room in Connemara, during storm Jorge in February 2020, and was released on the 19th of June.

Phil Kenny is a poet based in Dublin, he has performed at Knockan Stockan and Electric Picnic. Additionally, Philip received the Arts Council and Arts & Disability Ireland Mentoring Award in 2019 and has been published in Storytellers edited by Anna Fox. The poems he will be performing are personal, sensory, sometimes normal (relatively) and often surreal and abstract. He has mild Asperger’s Syndrome, which connects the world in a way he is familiar with, but often appears obscure to others. Writing and speaking has ever been a way of connecting people to that world. Please talk to him if you like. He would love nothing more.

Mairéad Folan is the Artistic Director of Galway-based NoRopes Theatre Company. She has directed and produced the following NoRopes productions: An Irresponsible Father’s Guide to Parenting (UK), Wake, Flash Theatre – a 24 hr event, Wasted and The Open Couple. She received a MA in Drama and Theatre Studies from National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland and an Acting Diploma from London College of Music. (2020). Mairéad is a founding member of Galway-based theatre collective, Theatre57. Her debut as playwright, Meet Luke, will be given a rehearsed reading on 8 October as part of this year’s Baboró International Arts Festival for Children.
